Also try a walk along the path, which takes you to Balka Beach, one of Bornholm's most beautiful beaches.
Exciting experiences at Nexø Museum
At Nexø Museum, which is located 50 meters from Nexø Harbour, you will get exciting experiences about Nexø's history with a special focus on the fishing industry and not least World War II, where Nexø became a pawn in the grand political game between Germany, Russia and England. Come and experience the dramatic story yourself.
Market days and cozy market atmosphere
Right next to Nexø Museum you will find Skippertorvet, where there is a flea market during the summer. It is a popular event for both locals and tourists. Visit the cozy stalls, where you will be tempted by good offers while listening to cozy live accordion music. Continue up to the city square Torvet, where there are cozy shops and cafes. Don't forget to also visit the gallery at the harbor with beautiful glass- and ceramic designs.
Railways, butterflies and play grounds
Today, cars, buses and bicycles bring Bornholm's residents and tourists around the island, but until the 1960s, railways were a large part of Bornholm's transport routes. At the railway museum in Nexø you can explore Bornholm's railway history. Back to the present, you can continue to Bornholm's Butterfly Park, which is 900 meters from Torvet, where you can experience the most beautiful butterflies in a tropical climate. On the way to the butterfly park, you pass the playground Værftet, which is a cozy place if you have children with you on holiday. Also try visiting the large amusement park Brændesgårdshaven, where all rides are free once you have paid the entrance fee.
Live closely to Balka Beach
At the railway museum you will have experienced that in the old days there was a railway from Nexø to Balka Beach. Although it is only about three kilometers from Nexø to Balka Beach, the upper class preferred to travel by train when going to the beach. Today, the railway tracks have been converted into cycle paths. Rent a bike and drive along the beautiful route, which brings you to one of Bornholm's most beautiful beaches. The soft white sand together with a shallow water depth makes Balka Beach very child-friendly. At Balka Beach you can get lessons in both windsurfing and kitesurfing as well as paddleboarding.
Balka Beach is located at the small fishing village of Snogebæk, where there is also a wonderful harbor atmosphere. Visit the former cafe Søren's, where there is live music and fun for all age groups.
Martin Andersen Nexø
The author Martin Andersen Nexø - who wrote, among other things, "Ditte, Child of Man" and "Pelle, the Conqueror", grew up in Nexø. Today, his birthplace has been converted into a museum, which offers exciting photographs, paintings and stories about the author's life and works. Take a walk in the author's footsteps on the 6.6 kilometer long poet's route, which starts and ends at the Martin Andersen Nexø museum. The poet route takes you past 8 stops, each of which offers live audio narrations about the author's life and literature.
After lots of experiences, maybe you need some lunch? There are many good cafes and restaurants in Nexø...but many of our regulars' favorite is Nexø Smokehouse, which offers a wide selection of smoked products (also other than fish). At Nexø Smokehouse you get delicacies at a high level at reasonable prices.
Paradisbakkerne - The Hills of Paradise
In the novel “Pelle the Conqueror”, Pelle was a cowherd in the Hills of Paradise. At the time, Pelle probably did not have time to enjoy the beautiful area - but we hope you do. The Hills of Paradise offers an adventurous nature with rocky landscapes, small fissure valleys and hiking blocks from the Ice Age. Make sure to tie the laces well before you leave home, sheep as the name suggests, The Hills of Paradise is a very hilly area. In the Hills of Paradise you can see one of Bornholm's seven castles, Gammelborg, and one of Bornholm's largest rocking stones. Try to see if you can make it rock.
