A fantastic holiday in Rø
Between Allinge and Gudhjem you will find Bornholm's smallest parish - the town of Rø. The name "Rø" dates back to the 15th century, when the church at the time in the parish had a nice red roof. Rø is a quiet town where you have easy access to fantastic nature experiences.
Rø Golf Courses
As the name suggests, Rø Golfhus is perfect for those with an interest in golf. With Rø Golf Course as a neighbour, you can enjoy a relaxing day on the golf course, which is one of the country's best and most beautiful golfing facilities. The golf facility was designed by the internationally recognized golf course architect, Line Mortensen. On the golf course, you also get a rich nature experience, where you can enjoy the view of spruce forest, deciduous forest, disused quarries and rocks. For example, take a trip on the Old Course or New Course. The golf course also has practice areas for all levels, and is also equipped with a driving range, putting green, green fees, two 18-hole courses and a 3-hole course. If you are traveling with family or children, they will surely also love the opportunity to play soccer golf. If you're hungry, you can stop by Restaurant Stenby Mølle, which is located right next to the golf course. Here you can have a chat with other golf enthusiasts, or you can enjoy a good bite to eat in peace and quiet.
Beautiful nature
In Rø you will find a beautiful forest area, better known as "Rø Plantage", which was laid out approximately 150 years ago. Follow the marked hiking trail of approximately 5.5 km, where you will come through a fantastically beautiful hilly terrain with crevasse valleys, rocks and forest lakes. In the plantation you will also find a cycle path along the disused railway line between Rø and Klemensker. Bring the picnic basket with you - on your trip you will pass both resting areas and barbecue areas, which provide a good opportunity to take a break in idyllic surroundings. In Rø Plantage you will also find one of Bornholm's hidden gems, which is a favorite place of visit for many locals – namely the popular lake "Borgedalssøen". Borgedalssøen was raised after a violent storm in 1967, when a large part of the plantation's trees fell. In order to protect as much wood as possible from rot and insects, the stream that ran through the rift valley was diverted into a storage place for the wood.
Rø Plantage is also home to the Bat House, which is an exciting dissemination center for bats. Bornholm is the place in Denmark that houses the most different species of bats. On the lower floor you can see the exciting bat exhibition, and if you look up, you can see the bats flying in and out of the roof. The bats live in the attic, and although you must not go up and disturb them, you can follow the bats downstairs with a live camera. If you want to see more bats, then at dusk you should go out on the Bat Path which starts at the Bat House. The path is approximately 750 meters long and laid out with signs so you can easily find your way.
Close to fantastic natural attractions
Not far from your holiday home you will find one of Bornholm's most beautiful crevasse valleys with fantastic cycling and hiking trails in the "Kleven" area. Take a walk in the tracks of history with cliffs rising around you on a disused railway line. The railway line was called "Nordlandsbane"n and transported the people of Bornholm from the west coast to the north coast with steam locomotives. Today, you have to make the trip on foot or by bicycle - in return, you get a nature experience like you never would have in a steam locomotive.
From Rø Golfhus you have approximately 3 kilometers to the Heligdomsklipperne. Experience the impressive rock formations, which at the highest points rise up to 22 meters vertically. Wind and weather have over time created a hilly landscape of rocks and caves in Bornholm's granite. A process that has taken thousands of years, but which today gives rise to a beautiful nature experience. Experience both rocks, such as the moonlight rock, the capri rock, the love bench or you can take a trip down into the caves "Den Tørre Ovn" or "Den Våde Ovn". A fantastically different way to see the cliffs is by taking the boat trip with M/S Thor. At Gudhjem Harbour, you can board the boat M/S Thor and take an hour-long boat ride, where the captain will tell you the most spectacular anecdotes about the rocky landscapes "Heligdomsklipperne".
Gudhjem
About 6.5 kilometers east of Rø you will find Gudhjem, which is one of Bornholm's most special towns, also known as Denmark's only mountain town. Take a trip to Gudhjem and experience the crooked streets that wind up steep cliffs. You may have heard the expression "Sunshine over Gudhjem", and Gudhjem lives up to this in more ways than one. Gudhjem is known for having a "magical" light beyond the sea. Gudhjem's location on the north coast of Bornholm means that when the sun sets west of the island's northern tip, the town and the sea are enveloped in a magical hue. Both Danish and international artists have made pilgrimages to Bornholm for centuries to be inspired and portray the magical light. If you want to experience the sun over Gudhjem in a completely different way, then you must take a trip past Gudhjem Smokehouse. "Sol over Gudhjem" is a local classic regional dish that you can find on the menus of smokehouses. "Sol over Gudhjem" translated means "Sunshine over Gudhjem", and consists of rye bread, smoked herring, radishes, egg yolk and chives.
When you are in Gudhjem, you must not go home without having tasted a good ice cream, and that is exactly what Gudhjem Is has to offer. Maybe you can skip your lunch – the largest ice cream on the ice house's menu is more than 50 cm high and weighs more than 1.5 kg.
