Sandkås - The real Bornholm
Sandkås Holiday Homes is located in Sandkås, a little south of Allinge. Allinge-Sandkås was the first destination when Bornholm's tourism began at the beginning of the 20th century. The picturesque combination of cliffs and sandy beach attracted wealthy Germans and Danes alike - and Sandkås is still one of Bornholm's most sought-after resorts due to its beautiful nature and wonderful atmosphere.
Just below Sandkås Holiday Homes lies Sandkås Beach. Relax in the soft white sand or take a refreshing ride in the waves. After a swim, try a walk along the coastal path. To the south, the path takes you to the small fishing village of Tejn, where there are shopping opportunities, cafes and a harbor atmosphere - if you need refreshment, you can taste the good beers at the Penyllan microbrewery. Or how about a visit to Smedjen, which is a cozy food market at Tejn Harbour?
You can also take the coastal path north to Allinge. You walk between the rocks and the sea, and along the way you have fantastic views of the sea. In Allinge, you will be greeted by the old town with cozy half-timbered houses, and perhaps you will be hungry for deliciousness?...because on the way you will pass one of the town's smokehouses, which offers delicious fish delicacies.
Medieval adventure at Hammershus
After a great lunch, you can continue along the coastal path via Sandvig to Northern Europe's largest castle, Hammershus, which was the medieval power center on Bornholm. After Denmark had lost the Winter War to Sweden in 1658, the Swedes took over Bornholm - and thus also Hammershus. The Swedes started a heavy taxation of the people of Bornholm. That was not popular with the people of Bornholm, so they rebelled. With a cunning tactic, an outnumbered Bornholm group of freedom fighters overpowered the Swedish soldiers at Hammershus - a castle that had otherwise resisted attacks for more than 500 years - and thus Hammershus and Bornholm became Danish again.
Hammershus is not just exciting stories - it is also beautiful nature. For example, take a trip around the Hammerknuden rock formation. The trip has been voted Denmark's most beautiful hike. You will experience beautiful views of the sea, and not least the old granite quarries, which have been transformed into beautiful lakes.
Be transported 300 years back in time
South of Sandkås is Gudhjem, where you can sail to Christiansø, which in the 18th century was transformed into Denmark's advanced naval base in the Baltic Sea. The naval base was a thorn in the side of the English, who several times initiated fierce bombardments of the island. But Christiansø stood firm and maintained its connection to Denmark. The cannons still stand here, and with its exciting history and distinctive nature, you will be transported 300 years back in time when you visit Christiansø.
The world's smallest trotting track
You can also try to drive away from the coast - for example to the Almindingen forest, where you have a good chance of seeing some of Europe's last bison - and perhaps also win the big prize, because in Almindingen is the world's smallest trotting track, where there are sports, games and excitement. If you are into golf, the famous Rø Golf Course is also close to Sandkås Holiday Homes
