Store Strandhus - also known by the locals as "Holsterodde" - is located on South Bornholm in the attractive holiday home area, Østre Sømarken. With the cozy forest, beautiful sandy beach, and a charming little fishing village with a herring smokehouse within walking distance from the cottage, you can safely start looking forward to wonderful vacation days.
Østre Sømarken
Østre Sømarken is a small fishing village just west of Dueodde at the southern tip of Bornholm. In the Middle Ages, the area was an elongated dune landscape shaped by blowing sand. The fields around the dune landscape were also sandy, so the farmers' harvest was small, and therefore, the farmers had to supplement their income with fishing. Over time, fishing became more and more important, and Sømarken evolved into a small, charming fishing village. The atmosphere of the bygone fishing community is well-preserved at the small "Bakkerne Harbor," which is still an active fishing port - and right by the harbor, you'll also find Bakkarøgeriet, one of Bornholm's best herring smokehouses. In the evening, the smokehouse transforms into a cozy café with live music during the summer, attracting locals and tourists from the entire island.
Lovely Beach Days
In the early 1800s, the dune areas near Sømarken spread rapidly due to sand drift, and gradually, the agricultural land was completely covered in sand. It became even more challenging to farm, and therefore, around 1820, Danish King Frederik VI issued a decree that farmers were obligated to plant the dune areas to stop sand drift. The farmers received no payment, but in return, they were allowed to have the sandy areas after planting. At that time, the areas had no real value, so the farmers were unhappy about working for free. However, the descendants of the farmers can now rejoice in their ancestors' efforts, as Sømarken has become one of Bornholm's most sought-after holiday home areas.
The farmers' significant work over 200 years ago also means that today you can enjoy walking from Store Strandhus via charming forest paths to the beautiful sandy beach in front of the house. Take a swim in the clear water. Feel the warm sand between your toes. Enjoy the peace and the gentle lapping of the waves. If you feel like taking a hike, the beach continues all the way to Dueodde. Keep an eye out for the impressive Dueodde Lighthouse – then you know you're on the right track. Take a break and enjoy the beautiful view of the hilly dune landscape or climb up the lighthouse for a stunning panoramic view of Bornholm's south coast.
Nexø - a Modern Trading Town
You have good shopping options at Dagli' Brugsen in Pedersker, just 3.3 kilometers from Store Strandhus. If you want to visit a slightly larger town, you can either drive to Åkirkeby or along the coast to Nexø. In recent years, Nexø has undergone rapid development, transitioning from a fishing town to a charming town with commerce, craftsmanship, museums, and restaurants. Throughout the year, you can also experience various events such as flea markets, open workshops, and jazz festivals. At Nexø Harbor, you can enjoy the cozy summer atmosphere as cafes open along the harbor. Don't forget to see the sand sculptures on the harbor. It's impressive that it's possible to create such meter-high sand sculptures that look so lifelike. Just outside the center of Nexø, you'll find Bornholm Butterfly Park, a tropical and unique experience. In the Tropical House of the Butterfly Park, you can encounter more than 1,000 butterflies and lots of exotic plants, birds, and fish. Join one of the guided tours or explore the many impressions on your own.
Paradise Hills
Just 3 kilometers from Nexø, you'll find "Paradisbakkerne" which translates to "the Paradise Hills" with fairy-tale-like nature. Get your good hiking shoes ready and embark on a beautiful hike in the hilly area, offering both rocky landscapes, small crevice valleys, and glacial erratics. It's also in Paradise Hills that you'll find the popular "Rokkesten", one of Bornholm's largest stones at around 35 tons. Rokkesten is a glacial erratic transported to Paradise Hills by inland ice. If you find the right spot on the stone, you might be able to make it rock with just a gentle touch.
