Sandvig
Allinge-Sandvig
When you stay in a holiday apartment in Sandvig, you are holidaying in a town with important historical significance for tourism on Bornholm. At the end of the 1800s, Allinge-Sandvig housed many granite workers who came from Germany and Italy to work on North Bornholm. The workers were visited by their families, who were on holiday in Sandvig, and when they went back home, they told near and far about the little holiday gem Sandvig on Bornholm.
Thus, holidays in Sandvig began to become popular, and Sandvig is still a very popular holiday destination, both for a short break on Bornholm, summer holiday on North Bornholm or an extended weekend in a holiday apartment with a sea view. You can look forward to many exciting experiences when you choose accommodation in Sandvig.
Stay near attractions
Close to your holiday home, right by Sandvig, is Hammerknuden, where Northern Europe's largest castle ruin, Hammershus, is located. At Hammerknuden and at Hammershus Castle, you have the opportunity to hike with fantastic panoramic views of the Baltic Sea. If you follow Hammerknuden around the marked path, you will pass scenic surroundings and among other things Salomon's Chapel, which was built in the 13th century. Although the word "climate change" was hardly invented at the time, climate change was the reason for the construction of Solomon's Chapel. Because sudden temperature rises meant that there were extremely many herring around Bornholm – and the many herrings attracted merchants to Sandvig who wanted to buy herring. Of course, the merchants needed a place to pray, and therefore Salomon's Chapel was built on the rocks at Sandvig. It is good customer service, and when you are on holiday in Sandvig, you will still experience good service and happy holiday smiles.
On your trip around Hammerknuden, you will also pass Hammeren Lighthouse, which was used to send warning lights far out over the Baltic Sea so that the ships did not encounter the dangerous rocks. Hammerknuden is a fantastic hike that you must not miss out on. You will definitely get to use your legs, and then it is good that you stay in a beautiful holiday apartment in Sandvig, where you can relax afterwards.
The healing radium water
Close to the resort Sandvig Søpark, the 5.5-kilometre-long Stonemason's Path starts, which the stonemasons used on their way to the granite quarries over 100 years ago. If you follow the path, you will pass the Radium Spring, whose water contains the element radium. In the 1920s, a factory was established in Sandvig, where the radium water was used to produce lemon water and apollinar. The radioactive mineral water was sold with fine labels that told about the health-promoting properties of the radium soft drink. There was hardly any disease that the soft drink could not cure. It attracted large numbers of spa tourists, who came to Bornholm and stayed at a hotel in Sandvig to try the prestigious drink. However, the factory closed in the early 1930s. Interest in the popular radium soft drink had thus begun to decline, as the healing effects may not have been quite as promised on the labels. If you are on holiday in Sandvig, you cannot get a sip of radium, but we promise you that there are many other exciting taste experiences at the restaurants and cafes in Sandvig.
Denmark's longest zipline
The area around Sandvig is characterized by an important part of Bornholm's history, because it was here that granite quarrying started in the late 1800s - and the many millions of tons of granite that were quarried have left their mark. The large excavations have turned into beautiful lakes - of which Opal Lake is probably the most beautiful. Lake Opal is surrounded by steep cliff sides, and if you're brave, you can try the zipline across the lake. It is Denmark's longest zipline, and during the 290 meters you reach a speed of up to 60 km/h before you hit the water, and you should also try a trip around Hammersøen, which is close to your holiday home in Sandvig Søpark. Hammersøen is also next door to Hotel Hammersø, which is the most beautifully situated hotel in Sandvig... well, maybe on the whole of Bornholm. Like Opal Lake, Hammersøen is also surrounded by high cliffs. After the German occupation of Bornholm in 1940, the German troops therefore investigated whether the large lake could be used as a submarine base for the Baltic Sea fleet, as such a naval base would be almost impossible to attack by air. But Hammersøen is one of Denmark's only mountain lakes, and it is therefore located high above the water level in the Baltic Sea, so the establishment of a naval base would require a very large and expensive lock system, which is why the plans were dropped. Today, Sandvig and Hammersø breathe peace and idyll, and it is a wonderful experience when you are on holiday in Sandvig - and stay in either a holiday apartment or a beautiful holiday home in Allinge-Sandvig.
Hammershus - one of Bornholm's best sights
Hammershus is Bornholm's most visited attraction, and when you have visited Northern Europe's largest castle complex yourself, you will know why. From your holiday home in Sandvig, you live a short distance from the beautiful Hammershus. The castle is located on a steep cliff facing the sea, and in the Middle Ages the castle was impregnable from the water. Towards land there were large moats and fortifications, which made the owner of Hammershus the ruler of the Baltic Sea. No ship could sail in the Baltic Sea without fearing the navy and armies at Hammershus. When you stay in a holiday home or holiday apartment in Sandvig, a visit to Hammershus is a must, because exciting medieval adventures await both young and old. Did you know, for example, that there was a public user fee as early as the Middle Ages? Bornholm's executioner lived at Hammershus, and if you had to have your head chopped off, you had to pay for it yourself - and there was always prepayment!
The Cold War on Bornholm
Bornholm's location in the Baltic Sea has often brought the Sunshine Island into big politics. In the Middle Ages, Hammershus was used in the crusades against the Baltic countries, and during the Cold War, Bornholm was an important piece of the Cold War. NATO thus had radar and listening stations that could eavesdrop on the Russians. In the event of war, Bornholm was therefore the first target of attack for Russia. Russia even trained landing exercises at Sandvig on Bornholm in the 1970s. Several local Bornholmers have seen frogmen in the sea at Hammershus - and several times lost equipment from the Russian frogman corps, Spetznaz, was found in the rocks at Sandvig - for example a diving mask. The cases were hushed up for fear of provoking Russia. Today, a holiday in Sandvig is one of the most idyllic and beautiful things you can experience on Bornholm.
Good holiday days with exciting activities on North Bornholm

Allinge offers two smokehouses, where you can taste the Bornholm specialty, smoked herring. On your holiday in Sandvig, we also recommend that you visit Bornholm's Technical Collection, which is located 5 kilometers from Sandvig. The Technical Collection sounds boring, but it is a fun treasure trove of Bornholm nostalgia from grandfather's time. The museum exhibits machines, furniture, vehicles and at the same time both walls and ceilings are decorated with beautiful ceramics, crafts, toys and trinkets - and it all has a Bornholm connection. Bring the kids. For example, they would love to sit in a Draken fighter plane, which was part of the air defense around Bornholm in the 1960s. At the Technical Assembly, there are many fun experiences for all age groups.
When you are on holiday in Sandvig, you are of course not far away from the beautiful Sandvig Beach, where you experience what many call the real Bornholm: White sandy beach and towering cliffs in a picturesque combination.
If you stay in a holiday apartment on Strandpromenaden in Sandvig with a sea view, then you live right next to the beautiful beach. Feel the sun's rays warm on your cheeks, or jump into the water from the jetty. Right next to the beach, you will also find Sandvig Harbour with a view all the way up to Hammerknuden. Here it is obvious to take a walk and look at the nice little boats. As the icing on the cake, you can end the trip with a delicious ice cream from the popular Sandvig Ice Cream Kalas. Of course, you can also jump into the pool if you have chosen to stay in a holiday center in Allinge-Sandvig with a swimming pool.
